Which Came First...the Chicken or the Egg?

It is an age-old riddle that has perplexed generations: Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

Now British scientists claim to have finally come up with the definitive answer: The chicken.

The scientific and philosophical mystery was purportedly unraveled by researchers at Sheffield and Warwick universities, according to the Daily Mail newspaper.

The scientists found that a protein found only in a chicken's ovaries is necessary for the formation of the egg, according to the paper Wednesday. The egg can therefore only exist if it has been created inside a chicken.

The protein speeds up the development of the hard shell, which is essential in protecting the delicate yolk and fluids while the chick grows inside the egg, the report said.

"It had long been suspected that the egg came first but now we have the scientific proof that shows that in fact the chicken came first," said Dr. Colin Freeman, from Sheffield University's Department of Engineering Materials, according to the Mail.

"The protein had been identified before and it was linked to egg formation, but by examining it closely we have been able to see how it controls the process," he said. MSNBC

Think of the money that could be saved if scientists simply went to the Bible for their answers!

The first book in the Bible, Genesis, in chapter 1, verses 20-23, we are given the account of the fifth day of Creation. Verses 21-22 specifically refer to birds (including the chicken).

20 Then God said, “Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens.” 21 So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23 So the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

Taking Scripture at face value and believing it to be God's inspired word to man is a sure bet. Scientific FACT has never disproven the Bible. It's awesome to see how national news headlines point to the certainty of God's creation and marvelous design!

Are You Facing the SON?

Much has happened since I last wrote. Renae has faithfully written about it on her blog, so all I will say is, God is good and faithful, and He worked out the finances and details to get us to Bulgaria and back with our newest daughter, Ava!

The day we were taken on the 185-mile, 3 1/2 drive, to pick up Ava, we saw miles and miles of fertile farmland (at 90 mph, most of the way)! We saw corn and what looked to be wheat or barley, but what really stood out were the fields of sunflowers.

Now I'm no expert on sunflowers, but I did notice how all the sunflowers were facing the same direction...pointing directly towards the sun. I decided to research this a little bit and discovered this is called 'heliotropism'. Prior to blooming, all sunflowers start the morning facing the east horizon to catch the suns rays at daybreak. During the day, motor cells in the sunflower stem tilt the bud so that it follows the sun across the sky. At day's end, the sunflower is facing west. Over the night, the plant resets itself and is once again facing the east horizon the catch the sun the next day. Once the flower blooms, it does not follow the sun across the sky, however it still faces a general easterly direction.

When we saw the many acres of sunflowers, we marveled at how they were all facing the same direction. I wonder, if we compared Christians to sunflowers, how many of us are facing the Son, Jesus Christ, on a daily basis? Are we looking to Him when we first rise and when we lay our head down at night? Are we keeping our eyes on Him or are we distracted by the world around us?

I know I need to be more intentional about facing the Son each day...how about you?

My voice You shall hear in the morning, O LORD;
In the morning I will direct it to You,
And I will look up.
